Here we are. The ‘festive’ season 2020. Anyone else feeling exhausted/ overwhelmed and just wanting to hibernate your way through it all? If you are that person (i am definitely that person) then this shout out is for you.
The overwhelm is real y’all - this year has put us through every spectrum of emotion possible and quite frankly - we are over it!
Here’s a little something which I use whenever I am feeling untethered and in need of an energetic anchor. It’s officially called the 54321 grounding technique and is used by many psychologists and well-being practitioners.
So let’s get into it shall we?
Firstly, wherever you are and whatever you are doing - take a pause and then…
5 what are five things you can see?
4 what are four things you can touch?
3 what are three things you can hear?
2 what are two things you can smell?
1 what is one thing you can taste?
You can speak the answers out loud, to yourself or if you prefer, you can write them down.
I promise you, this works. Repeat whenever you need to carve a little space and time to call in the calm.
So, that’s the grounding - now here’s the gift.
Music is one of my many loves, in fact my first deep dive into broadcasting was in Radio (which will forever be my first love). Radio was most definitely the soundtrack of my life for much of my teen and early adulthood existence. My rather eclectic music taste (Dolly Parton,Bon Jovi and Debbie Gibson anyone?) can be credited to Von Radio,Casey Kasem, early days BET and a God-Mother who would send me Alice Coltrane records as birthday gifts.
